Main part

Make 2

Using US 7 (4.5mm) needles, cast on 20(22) sts in A.

Row 1: [K2, p2] to last 0(2) sts, k0(2).

Row 2: P0(2), [k2, p2] to end.

Rep rows 1–2, 5(7) times more.

Knit 12(14) rows.

Break A and join in B.

Beg with a k row, work 4 rows in st st.

Next row: K2, ssk, k3(4), k2tog, k2, ssk, k3(4), k2tog, k2. (16(18) sts)

Next row: P2tog, p to last 2 sts, p2tog. (14(16) sts)

Next row: K1, ssk, k1(2), k2tog, k2, ssk, k1(2), k2tog, k1. (10(12) sts)

Next row: [P2tog] to end. (5(6) sts)

Break yarn, thread through rem sts, and secure.

Ear

Make 4 (2 for each mitten)

Using US 6 (4mm) needles, cast on 3 sts in B.

Work 4 rows in st st.

Row 5: Sl1, k2tog, psso. (1 st)

Fasten off.

Top knot

Make 2 (1 for each mitten)

For the top knot, use the crochet hook and A to make a 4-in (10-cm) chain (see page 122).

to make up

Join main seam of mittens using flat stitch (see page 126), reversing seam on cuff to fold over.

Sew the ears in position using the photograph as a guide.

Using black yarn, work two French knots (see page 124) for the eyes and a “Y” shape for the nose.

Arrange the crochet chain into three loops and sew securely in the center of the top of the face section.

Weave in all loose ends.
